Matching a new crown or veneer to the teeth beside it defeats more restorations than fracture does. The difficulty is that a natural tooth is not one colour.
A tooth is layered, not painted
Enamel is largely translucent and carries very little colour of its own. Most of what an observer reads as tooth colour is dentine showing through from underneath.
That means light entering a tooth passes through one layer, reflects off another and comes back out. The effect is depth, and a flat block of uniform ceramic cannot reproduce it.
Technicians therefore build restorations in layers of differing opacity, trying to recreate the same path light takes through a natural tooth.
Colour changes from the gum to the edge
Near the gum, enamel is thinner and dentine dominates, so the tooth reads warmer and more saturated. This zone is often the darkest part of a front tooth.
Toward the biting edge, enamel thickens and there is little dentine behind it. Light passes almost through, producing a grey or bluish translucency that reads as youthful.
A restoration that ignores this gradient looks wrong even when its average colour is correct, because the eye reads the transition rather than the average.
Lighting changes the answer
Two objects can match under one light source and clearly differ under another, an effect known as metamerism. It happens when the materials reflect light differently across the spectrum.
A shade chosen under a dental operatory light may not hold under daylight, warm domestic bulbs or the mixed light of an office.
Careful practices check the match under more than one light and record the conditions, because a restoration is worn everywhere and not just in the chair.
Surface texture is part of the colour
Natural enamel is not smooth. It carries fine horizontal ridges and subtle contours that scatter light and soften reflections across the face of the tooth.
A restoration polished to a glassy shine reflects light in a single hard highlight, and reads as artificial even when its underlying colour is right.
Reproducing that texture is a hand skill, and it is one of the clearer differences between routine and highly finished laboratory work.
Why the timing of the appointment matters
Teeth dehydrate when they are held open and dry for a period, and dehydrated enamel becomes noticeably lighter and more opaque before rehydrating over hours.
A shade taken late in a long appointment can therefore be recorded against an artificially pale tooth, producing a restoration that later looks too light.
Shade selection is often done first for this reason, and a dentist who has concerns about an existing match is the right person to reassess it.
