A porcelain veneer sits on the front of a tooth, and for it to look natural the tooth underneath usually gives up a thin layer of enamel. The amount is small, but the reasoning behind it explains most of what follows.
The thickness has to come from somewhere
Porcelain needs a minimum thickness to hold its colour and resist fracture. Below that thickness the material turns fragile and oddly translucent, and the shade becomes hard to control.
If that thickness were simply added on top of the existing tooth, the finished surface would sit further forward than its neighbours. The result reads as bulky rather than straight.
Removing a comparable depth of enamel keeps the outer surface roughly where it started. The tooth ends up close to its original size, with a new outer layer doing the work.
Enamel bonds better than dentine
Adhesive dentistry depends on a bond between the cement and the tooth surface. Enamel is highly mineralised and uniform, which makes it the most predictable surface that bond can be formed against.
Dentine, the layer beneath, is wetter, more organic and threaded with tubules running toward the nerve. Bonds to dentine are achievable but less durable, and more prone to leaking over years of use.
Preparation is therefore kept deliberately shallow so that what remains is still enamel. A veneer bonded to enamel behaves as part of the tooth rather than a shell sitting on it.
Why some teeth need less reduction
Teeth that are already small, worn or set back may need almost no reduction, because the space the porcelain wants is already available. These situations are often described as minimal-preparation cases.
Teeth that are crowded, rotated or naturally bulky need more, since the veneer has to bring several surfaces into one plane. The more correction asked of the porcelain, the more room it requires.
That assessment comes from the position of the individual tooth rather than from any general rule, which is why it can only be made after an examination.
The change does not reverse
Enamel does not grow back. Once a layer has been removed, the tooth will need some form of covering from that point on, whether the original veneer or a later replacement.
This makes the decision different in kind from whitening or tooth movement, both of which change colour or position without permanently altering tooth structure.
It is a reason to have the alternatives set out before committing, and that conversation belongs with a dentist who has examined the teeth in question.
What the preparation appointment involves
The dentist works to a planned depth, often cutting shallow guide grooves first so that reduction stays even across the whole surface rather than deepening in one spot.
A temporary covering usually protects the prepared teeth while the porcelain is being made, because freshly prepared surfaces can react sharply to hot and cold.
Sensitivity that persists, or a temporary that comes away, is a reason to go back rather than wait. Exposed prepared dentine is vulnerable for as long as it stays uncovered.
