Two people using identical whitening strips can reach visibly different results. The variation comes mostly from what the strip encounters rather than from what it contains.
Starting shade determines the visible change
Peroxide breaks down coloured molecules already present in the tooth, so the amount of change available depends on how much pigment exists to break down.
A tooth that is already light has comparatively little to remove and will show a smaller shift regardless of how long treatment continues.
Yellow-toned discolouration generally responds more readily than grey-toned discolouration, because the molecules involved differ in structure. That is a chemical difference rather than a matter of product quality.
A flat strip meets a curved arch
Teeth are not aligned in a flat plane, and a strip laid across them contacts prominent surfaces firmly while bridging over recessed ones.
Rotated or crowded teeth receive uneven gel coverage, producing a lighter result on the surfaces that faced outward and less change elsewhere.
Custom trays made from an impression address this by holding gel against every surface, which is a large part of the difference between the two approaches.
Contact time is the other variable
The reaction proceeds while peroxide remains in contact with the tooth, so total exposure is a product of concentration and time rather than concentration alone.
Strips that lift, slip or are removed early deliver less exposure than the instructions assume, and saliva dilutes the gel as the session progresses.
This is why inconsistent use produces disproportionately weaker results rather than simply taking longer to reach the same place. Sessions that are cut short do not accumulate into an equivalent full one.
What is on the teeth already matters
A heavy surface film blocks contact and absorbs part of the gel, so teeth cleaned professionally beforehand start from a genuinely different position.
Existing restorations do not lighten at all, which becomes visible on front teeth as surrounding enamel changes shade around them.
Exposed root surfaces, cracks and worn edges allow peroxide inward more readily and are the usual source of sharp sensitivity during use.
Where assessment changes the answer
Discolouration confined to one tooth, banded patterns, or white and brown mottling indicate causes that respond differently and may not respond at all.
Untreated decay and leaking margins make any peroxide product uncomfortable and can allow it to reach tissue it should not.
An examination establishes which of these apply, and it is the step that distinguishes a predictable result from an experiment.
